Picking the best tree for you

Real tree with roots

Real trees that still have their roots come in a pot and can be replanted in your garden. For many people, this is the most sustainable option. These trees can continue to grow and provide environmental benefits long after the festive season.

If you plan to use the tree again next year, you can plant it in a container rather than directly in the ground. This will make it easier to bring the tree indoors next year.

Cut trees

If you don’t have space to replant a tree, cut trees are often the next best choice. After the festive period, these trees can be chopped up and added to your compost bin or garden waste. Or instead of disposing of it, you can leave it chopped up in a corner of your garden to slowly decompose - the critters in your garden will thank you for the great habitat!

Check your local council's website to find out more about Christmas tree collections in your area.

Artificial trees

Artificial trees are a popular option due to their convenience and reusability. However, they are made from plastic, giving them a larger environmental impact when making and disposing of them when compared to real trees.

Since artificial trees cannot be recycled, it’s important to reuse them for as many years as possible. If you decide you no longer want your artificial tree and it’s still in good condition, consider donating it or giving it away on platforms like Freegle. This way someone else can benefit from it, and it stays out of landfill.
