Items too good to throw away at recycling centres

Find out what happens to items too good to throw away at recycling centres

There are lots of ways to pass on your unwanted items. This means that you may not even need to visit a recycling centre.

Bringing items to a recycling centre

There are 21 recycling centres across Essex which accept your household waste. A lot of the items brought to the recycling centres are too good to throw away. So each site has a ‘re-user’ that may accept items that aren’t electrical.

Re-users

Items left at a recycling centre become the property of Essex County Council and the re-user on the site. Re-users pay for the contract and either pass the items on or sell them, taking the income they make. This plays an important role in helping the environment. Preventing waste in the first place is the best option.

Taking items from a recycling centre

Members of the public are not allowed to pay for items or take them away for free. This is because the item may not be fit for use and someone may get injured. However, if items are not in a container or a designated storage area, then two visitors to a recycling centre may exchange items if they wish.
