We all hate fly tipping littering our roads and countryside. This is why we’re excited to be working in partnership with district, city and borough councils in Essex, the Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner, and the Environment Agency to tackle the amount of fly tipping in Essex.
The SCRAP Fly Tipping campaign, originally created by Hertfordshire Waste Partnership, launches on 28 January and will run for three months. The campaign will provide information on what fly tipping is, what the impacts are, and how to dispose of household waste responsibly. Alongside the campaign, we will be working together to share intelligence and increase visible enforcement to deter fly tipping.
Fly tipping is the illegal dumping of waste on land that doesn’t have a waste licence. This could include leaving items by a bin, or outside a closed charity shop, recycling centre or donation bank.
Over the past three years, household waste has been found in over 60% of fly tips across the county, costing Essex taxpayers around £1 million to clean up in 2022-23.
Councillor Peter Schwier, Chair of the Essex Waste Partnership and Essex County Council Cabinet Member for Environment, Waste Reduction and Recycling, said:
“We listened to your concerns around fly tipping and included it as an additional commitment in our Waste Strategy for Essex.
Fly tipping is not only an eyesore, but it’s harmful for the environment, endangers wildlife and costs Essex taxpayers millions of pounds to clean up.
Through this campaign, we want to make it easier for you to get rid of waste, either with a council service or through a licenced waste collector.
Let’s work together to keep Essex clean.”
